David Boas to serve as editor-in-chief of new journal, Neurophotonics

October 29, 2013

Martinos Center researcher David Boas will helm a new journal to be launched by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, in 2014. The journal, Neurophotonics, will cover the optical technologies and methods helping to advance understandings of brain phenomena including electrical excitability, neuroglial partnership, neurovascular signaling, metabolic activity, and hemodynamics in health and disease.

"As advanced optical methods are driving a revolution in the neurosciences that will persist for decades to come, I am delighted that SPIE is starting Neurophotonics," Boas said in an SPIE news release. "The journal will provide a highly visible focal point to facilitate and accelerate the rapidly expanding impact of this discipline."

Neurophotonics, which has long played an important role in the study of brain phenomena, has been covered by the SPIE Journal of Biomedical Optics since its launch in 1996. But burgeoning interest in the field created the need for a spin-off journal focused solely on the development and application of this photonics technology. The journal will cover a broad range of topics, from microscopic techniques to clinical and translation applications, from computational methods to optogenetics and other optical means of manipulating cellular behavior.

Boas is the director of the Optics Division of the MGH/HST Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging.
